Distinguished and Famous people from Bowen
Bowen's newspaper history includes a local boy who grew up helping produce the paper and later became its owner and editor. His working life crossed printing, community organisations and local government.
📰 Douglas James “Jim” Darwen
Jim Darwen was born in Bowen in 1906 and attended the local state school. As a boy he helped at his father's newspaper, the Bowen Independent and Proserpine Agriculturalist, taking printed sheets from the press and delivering copies before school. He had wanted to become a carpenter, but entered the newspaper business at fourteen. As an editor he also involved himself in town affairs: the progress association, local band, show society and Port Denison Sailing Club all benefited from his participation. He was twice elected to Bowen Town Council. His life connects the printed record of Bowen with the daily work of its community.
